As any of you who have investigated the possibility already know Houghton does not currently have any sort of broadband service. Also, it is unlikely that any sort of service will be provided in the future as we are too far from the local exchange for DSL and too far out of the conurbation for cable service.
Thus, the proposal outlined here is to do it myself and set up a community, always on Internet access service. The service would allow for fast access to the Internet via wireless Ethernet devices as well as providing a network for local peer to peer communications. To increase the likelihood of this happening I have contacted the East Midlands development Agency to investigate the possiblility of grants or subsidies, but I feel it is best to show a strong base of interest as a means to encourage funding.
